Author Guidelines
Surgical Rounds is a monthly, peer-reviewed surgical journal that reaches more than 43,000 surgeons and surgical specialists throughout the country. Articles should be geared to this audience. Editors are most interested in articles that focus on surgical techniques and have everyday clinical application.
We prefer electronic submissions sent as Microsoft Word® documents (doc), with any high-resolution images attached as JPG files. If electronic submission is not possible, a disk or CD should accompany two hardcopies of the mailed manuscript. Articles and all accompanying material should be e-mailed to or sent by regular mail to 103 College Road East, Princeton, NJ 08540.
Specifications checklist
1. Length—Articles should be between 1,000 and 2,500 words.
2. Title page—Include title of the article; authors’ names, titles, and primary affiliations; city and state of
the affiliated institute; and the corresponding author’s address, phone number, and e-mail address. The list
of authors on your manuscript should be proportional to the magnitude of the manuscript.
3. Abstract—This should be no more than 150 words and structured to include the following three sideheads:
Introduction, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion. The Results and Discussion section should
summarize the article’s most important points.
4. Abbreviations—Spell out all terms at first mention; use of nonstandard abbreviations should be avoided.
5. Subheads—Insert subheads at appropriate intervals. Articles should include an untitled introductory
paragraph, followed by Case report, Discussion, Conclusion, and References. Modify or add subheads as
needed, according to the type of article.
6. Drugs, devices, and products—Provide generic names whenever possible. If a trade name must be used,
include the ® or ™ symbol following the product name.
7. Figures—Provide high-resolution images (minimum 300 dots per inch [DPI]) as JPG, GIF, or TIF
files. DO NOT SEND IMAGES AS DOCUMENT FILES OR EMBEDDED IN THE PAPER.
Label figures numerically, to correlate with figure legends, and cite all figures in the text.
Figures of all modalities used to diagnose the patient’s condition should be included.
Provide preoperative, operative, gross-specimen, and pathology images in color.
Figures marked with arrows or text must be accompanied by unmarked versions.
When reproducing a figure from another source, permission must be provided.
8. Figure legends—Provide these on a separate page at the end of the article. Pathology slide legends
should indicate type of staining and magnification used.
9. Tables—Tables should be provided on a separate page at the end of the article and numbered, titled, and
cited in the text.
10. References—Provide references on a separate page following the article. Limit references to 25 and
number them consecutively, as they appear in the text. Format references according to Iverson C,
Flanagin A, Fontanarosa PB, et al. American Medical Association Manual of Style. 9th ed. Philadelphia,
Pa: Williams and Wilkins, 1998. DO NOT FORMAT REFERENCES AS ENDNOTES.
Manuscripts will undergo peer review, which may take several weeks. Authors whose manuscripts are
deemed appropriate for Surgical Rounds will be notified of any major concerns and invited to revise and
resubmit. After acceptance, articles will be edited to conform to Surgical Rounds' and American Medical
Association (AMA) style, and edited manuscript pages and PDFs will be sent to the corresponding author for
final review before publication.
This checklist is also available as a downloadable pdf.
